New York is a state in the northeastern United States. Majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York city. The state is often regionalized into upstate and downstate. New York is the home of Ellis Island, where many immigrants in the early 20th century arrived in the United States.

The town of Oneonta is in Otsego County, New York in United States. The population was 4,994 at the 2000 census. The town surrounds the city of Oneonta which has a population of 13,791. According to the census, the town has a total area of 87.1 square kilometers of which 86.8 square kilometers is land and 0.4 square kilometers is water. The population was spread out with 23.8 percent under the age of 18, 9.1 percent from 18 to 24, 23.6 percent  from 25 to 44, 26.9 percent from 45 to 64 and 16.5 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years.
 
There were 1,958 households out of which 28.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.5 percent were married couples living together, 9.5 percent had a female householder with no husband present and 33.7 percent were non families. 27.1 percent of all households were made up of individuals and 11.4 percent had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.80. About 6.2 percent of families and 15.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.8 percent of those under age 18 and 4.8 percent of those above ages 65 or over.
