Southeast (T)
New York is a state in the northeastern United States. Majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York city. The state is often regionalized into upstate and downstate. New York is the home of Ellis Island, where many immigrants in the early 20th century arrived in the United States.
Southeast is a town in Putnam County, New York in United States. The town has a total area of 90.6 square kilometers of which 83.0 square kilometers is land and 7.6 square kilometers is water. The population was 17,316 at the 2000 census. The town is in the southeast part of the county. It was founded in 1788 and formed the southeast corner of Dutchess County. In 1795, the land that had been Southeast and Frederickstown was divided into four townships, the present Southeast, Carmel, Kent and Patterson. Southeast lost its northern half, and expanded slightly to the west. Its most densely populated area in the town is the village of Brewster, New York.
There were 6,184 households out of which 37.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.1 percent were non families. 20.6 percent of all households were made up of individuals and 6.5 percent had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.22. The racial makeup of the town was 92.88 percent white, 1.87 percent African American, 0.14 percent native American, 1.63 percent Asian, 0.09 percent Pacific Islander and 2.40 percent from other races.
