New York is a state in the north eastern United States. Majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York city, the state is often regionalized into upstate and downstate. New York is the home of Ellis Island, where many immigrants in the early 20th century arrived in the United States.
Johnstown is a town located on the southern border of Fulton county, New York, USA. As of the 2000 U.S. census, the town had a population of 7,166. The town is located on the southern border of the county. The cities of Johnstown and Gloversville are located within the town. Johnstown was founded by and is named after William Johnson, a british colonial officer and government official. According to the U.S census bureau, the town has a total area of 184.9 square kilometer. 181.8 square kilometer of it is land and 3.0 square kilometer of it is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 7,166 people, 2,471 households, and 1,840 families residing in the town. The population density was 39.4 per square kilometer. There were 2,728 housing units at an average density of 15 per square kilometer. There were 2,471 households out of which 31.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63 percent were married couples living together, 7.2 percent had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5 percent were non families. 19.6 percent of all households were made up of individuals and 9.9 percent had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
In the town the population was spread out with 21 percent under the age of 18, 7.6 percent from 18 to 24, 29.8 percent from 25 to 44, 25 percent from 45 to 64, and 16.6 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 114.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 116.2 males. About 6.9 percent of families and 9.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. The town is often regarded as among the most beautiful parts of New York, it is one of the most visited places amongst the most die hard travelers the world over.
