New York is a state in the northeastern United States. It is called New York State when there is need to distinguish it from New York City. Because a significant majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York City, the state is often regionalized into Upstate and Downstate. New York is the home of Ellis Island, where many immigrants in the early 20th century arrived in the United States.
 
Newark is a village in Wayne County, New York, USA, 48 kilometers east by south of Rochester. The population was 9,682 at the 2000 census.The village of Newark is in the south part of the Town of Arcadia and is in the south of Wayne County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 14.0 square kilometers. In the village the population was spread out with 25.4 percent under the age of 18, 7.4 percent from 18 to 24, 27.2 percent from 25 to 44, 22.2 percent from 45 to 64, and 17.8 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.8 males.
