The city name was taken from Norwich, Connecticut. The city of Norwich is the county seat of Chenango County, New York. Norwich became an incorporated village in 1816. The city was established in 1914. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.3 square kilometers.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.6 percent under the age of 18, 8.2 percent from 18 to 24, 26.1 percent from 25 to 44, 20.0 percent from 45 to 64, and 21.2 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 78.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.0 males.
