New York is a state in the northeastern United States. Majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York City, the state is often regionalized into Upstate and Downstate. New York is the home of Ellis Island, where many immigrants in the early 20th century arrived in the United States.

The city of Oneonta is located within Otsego County, New York, and is surrounded by the town of Oneonta, a separate political unit. The city was established in 1908 and as of the 2000 U.S. Census, had a population of 13,292. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.3 square kilometers. The city is in the northern foothills of the Catskill Mountains between Binghamton and Albany, New York.
 
In the city the population was spread out with 13.6 percent under the age of 18, 43.1 percent from 18 to 24, 17.6 percent from 25 to 44, 13.8 percent from 45 to 64, and 11.8 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 82.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.7 males.
