New York is a state in the northeastern United States. Majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York City, the state is often regionalized into Upstate and Downstate. New York is the home of Ellis Island, where many immigrants in the early 20th century arrived in the United States.
 
Penn Yan is a village in Yates County, New York, USA. The population of the village was 5,219 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Yates County. The name is an invention of the early settlers for their community. The village of Penn Yan is primarily in the town of Milo, but a small section is in the town of Benton. Penn Yan Airport is south of the village.
 
The first frame dwelling at Penn Yan was built in 1799. The village became the county seat in 1823, when Yates county was created, and was incorporated in 1833. The name of the village is said to have been contrived from the first syllables of  Pennsylvania  and  Yankee, as most of the early settlers were Pennsylvanians and New Englanders.
 
Douglas G. Marchionda, Jr. is a Mayor. The duty of the Mayor is to monitor the administration and government of the Village and the conduct of the employees of the Village, and communicate such information and recommend such measures to the Village Board as will improve the finances, administration and government of the Village.
 
Geographically the village has a total area of 6.0 square kilometers, out of which 5.9 square kilometers of its area is covered by land and 0.2 square kilometers is occupied by water. In the village the population was spread out with 23.9 percent  under the age of 18, 7.6 percent from 18 to 24, 26.4 percent from 25 to 44, 20.4 percent from 45 to 64, and 21.7 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
 
Penn Yan is a town known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages. It is one of the favorite holiday places for most of the vacation lovers. The might of the sector services continues attracting new inhabitants in the city.
