New York is a state in the northeastern United States. Majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York City, the state is often regionalized into Upstate and Downstate. New York is the home of Ellis Island, where many immigrants in the early 20th century arrived in the United States.
 
Sand Lake is a town in Rensselaer County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a population of 7,987. The Town of Sand Lake is in the south-central part of the county. Sand Lake is east of Albany, New York. The town was first settled around 1765. The town was formed in 1812 from the Towns of Greenbush and Berlin. In 1843, part of the town reverted to Greenbush. The Town of Poestenkill was founded in 1848 from the northern part of Sand Lake.
 
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 93.6 square kilometers. 91.2 square kilometers of it is land and 2.5 square kilometers of it is water. In the town the population was spread out with 26.6 percent under the age of 18, 6.1 percent from 18 to 24, 28.6 percent from 25 to 44, 28.1 percent from 45 to 64, and 10.6 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.
