New York is a state in the northeastern United States. Majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York City, the state is often regionalized into Upstate and Downstate. The town of Smithtown is in Suffolk County, New York on the North Shore of Long Island. As of the United States 2000 Census, the town had a total population of 115,715 in 2005. The town was first settled around 1650. The town has a total area of 288.5 square kilometers. In the town the population was spread out with 26.0 percent under the age of 18, 5.4 percent from 18 to 24, 30.4 percent from 25 to 44, 24.8 percent from 45 to 64, and 13.4 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
