New York is a state in the northeastern United States. Majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York City; the state is often regionalized into Upstate and Downstate. New York is the home of Ellis Island, where many immigrants in the early 20th century arrived in the United States.
 
Wappinger is a municipality of in Dutchess County, New York, United States. In 2000, the population of the city was 26,274 and an area of 74.0 square kilometers. The name is derived from the Wappani Indians that inhabited the area. The town of Wappinger is located in the southern part of the county.  
 
In the town the population was spread out with 25.4 percent under the age of 18, 7.6 percent from 18 to 24, 32.5 percent from 25 to 44, 24.1 percent from 45 to 64 and 10.4 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.2 males.
