New York is a state in the northeastern United States. Majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York City; the state is often regionalized into Upstate and Downstate. New York is the home of Ellis Island, where many immigrants in the early 20th century arrived in the United States.

Westmoreland is a town in Oneida County, New York, USA. The population was 6,207 at the 2000 census. In 2005 polulation was 6,340. The town of Westmoreland is in the west-central part of the county. The New York State thruway passes across the town. Westmoreland is west of Utica, New York. According to the United States census bureau, the town has a total area of 111.8 square kilometers 111.7 square kilometers is land and 0.1 square kilometers is water area.
 
The town was first settled in 1748 by James Dean, a missionary among the members of the Oneida tribe. The town of Westmoreland was formed in 1792 from the town of Whitestown. In 1802, part of Westmoreland was used to establish the towns of Vernon and Verona. More of Westmoreland was lost in 1855 on the formation of the town of Kirkland to the south. In the town the population was spread out with 27.6 percent under the age of 18, 6.2 percent from 18 to 24, 29.4 percent from 25 to 44, 24.2 percent from 45 to 64, and 12.6 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 104.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.1 males.
 
Famous places are town of Westmoreland Park, Anna Newman Kunz Memorial Pool, Skate Board Park and Basketball Court. Communities and locations in Westmoreland are Dix is formerly Republican is a hamlet near the north town line. Goodrich Corners is a hamlet near the west town line. Greenway Corners is a hamlet in the northwest corner of the town. Hecla is a hamlet southwest of Westmoreland village. It was formerly Hecla Works.
