The New York State Museum is located in Albany, New York, specifically in downtown Albany in the Empire State Plaza. It is opened on a daily basis from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. but it is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas and New Years Day. In the Museum, several facilities can be rent by private or non-profit organizations; however, the Museum emphasizes that it does not allow the use of its facilities for events or activities that could damage and or disturb the collection and the facilities. The events must not interfere with public use; events during business hours are prohibited, the Museum has to approve the activities in advance. The activities and programs of the Museum have the priority regarding the use of the facilities. For instance, the meeting rooms, the first and fourth floor galleries, the lobby and the theaters can be used only when the Museum is closed or when its use does not interfere with any activity of the Museum.

The New York State Museum has backpacks, wheelchairs and strollers that facilitate the convenience and comfort of the visitors. Some exhibits have interpretation aides available for the visually impaired. This Museum has a Cafe and a Shop. The Museum Cafe is located on the fourth floor and it opens 7 days a week.
