Lancaster (V)
New York is a state in the north eastern United States. Majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York city, the state is often regionalized into upstate and downstate. New York is the home of Ellis Island, where many immigrants in the early 20th century arrived in the United States.
Lancaster is a village in Erie county, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the village population was 11,188. The village of Lancaster is in the south part of the town of Lancaster and is east of buffalo, New York. The Lancaster opera house is locally famous for its musicals and stage plays. The village of Lancaster was incorporated in 1849 from part of the town of Lancaster. The village is proud of its historic past and emphasizes preservation of its historic buildings. Lancaster was formerly known as cayuga creek.
According to the U.S census bureau, the village has a total area of 7 square kilometer. 7 square kilometer of it is land and 0.1 square kilometer of it is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 11,188 people, 4,726 households, out of which 27.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.4 percent were non families. 32.9 percent of all households were made up of individuals and 15.5 percent had someone living alone who had 65 years of age or older and 2,958 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,605.8 per square kilometer. There were 4,908 housing units at an average density of 704.5 per square kilometer.
In the village the population was spread out with 22.6 percent under the age of 18, 7.2 percent from 18 to 24, 30.2 percent from 25 to 44, 22.2 percent from 45 to 64, and 17.8 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.9 males. About 3.1 percent of families and 5.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. As it is often regarded as among the most beautiful parts of New York, it is one of the most visited places amongst the most die hard travelers the world over.
