Somers (T)




New York is a state in the northeastern United States. Majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York city. The state is often regionalized into upstate and downstate. New York is the home of Ellis Island, where many immigrants in the early 20th century arrived in the United States.

Somers is a town located in Westchester County, New York in United States. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 18,346. The town of Somers is in the northeast part of the county. The town has a total area of 83.6 square kilometers of which 77.8 square kilometers is land and 5.7 square kilometers is water. With a population of over 20,000, the town is strongly suburban. The town was established as Stephentown in 1788 but confusion with another New York town named Stephentown led the town to change its name to Somerstown. In 1808, the name was changed to Somers to honor Richard Somers, who was a naval captain from New Jersey.
 
There were 6,802 households out of which 33.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.5 percent were married couples living together, 5.4 percent had a female householder with no husband present and 24.0 percent were non families. 21.4 percent of all households were made up of individuals and 12.4 percent had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.06. The racial makeup of the town was 94.84 percent white, 1.71 percent African American, 0.05 percent native American, 1.86 percent Asian, and 0.01 percent Pacific Islander.
