Floral Park (V)
Floral Park is an incorporated village in Nassau County, New York on Long Island. The population of the village was 15,967 at the 2000 census. The village is at the western border of Nassau County, and is located in both the town of Hempstead and the town of North Hempstead. The neighborhood of Floral Park, Queens is adjacent to the village.
Floral Park was known as East Hinsdale in 1874, when John Lewis Childs arrived there to work for C.L. Allen as a seed seller. After building his own seed and bulb business, and starting America's first seed catalogue business, Childs bought the land around the Hinsdale Post Office, to promote his own business and the local horticultural industry, Childs named the local streets after flowers and renamed the area Floral Park.
The history of Floral Park begins in 1874, when 17 year old John Lewis Childs came to the area known as East Hinsdale. In 1899 the County of Nassau was formed and Floral Park became a part of it. The Village of Floral Park was formally incorporated on October 15, 1908. The village has a mayor council form of government. The current mayor is Phil Guarnieri the four-member village board is comprised of trustees Kevin J. Greene, Gerard M. Bambrick, Thomas J. Tweedy, and James E. Rhatigan. Floral Park has its own police force. Floral Park also has a volunteer fire department.
The western village boundary is the border of New York City. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.5 square kilometers, all land. In the village the population was spread out with 24.5 percent under the age of 18, 6.4 percent from 18 to 24, 28.3 percent from 25 to 44, 25.3 percent from 45 to 64, and 15.6 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.4 males.
Two high schools are located in Floral Park, Floral Park Memorial High School and Sewahnaka High School, which are part of the Sewahnaka Central High School. Floral Park is a town known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages. It is one of the favorite holiday places for most of the vacation lovers.
