North Hempstead is a town in Nassau County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town population was 222,611. The town of North Hempstead occupies the northwest part of the county. The total population is 222,975 in 2005. The area was first settled around 1643 and became part of the town of Hempstead. In the 19th century North Hempstead became the seat of Queens County, which included the three towns of North Hempstead, Hempstead, and Oyster Bay. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 179.0 square kilometers.
