New York is a state in the northeastern United States. Majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York City; the state is often regionalized into Upstate and Downstate. New York is the home of Ellis Island, where many immigrants in the early 20th century arrived in the United States.
 
Valley Stream is a village in Nassau County, New York. In 2000, the population of the village was 36,368 and an area of 9.0 square kilometers. If you include South Valley Stream and North Valley Stream the total population is 57,795 as of the 2000 census. The Village of Valley Stream is inside the southwest part of the town of Hempstead along the border with Queens. Several communities bordering Valley Stream are Elmont, Lynbrook, Malverne, Franklin Square, Hewlett, Woodmere and Rosedale.
 
In the village the population was spread out with 23.5 percent under the age of 18, 7.7 percent from 18 to 24, 29.1 percent from 25 to 44, 23.4 percent from 45 to 64 and 16.3 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.0 males. Valley Stream has many elementary schools, a few school districts and a few High Schools.
